Day 1 Transfer to Nyungwe forest National Park
Have breakfast at your hotel and get ready for your transfer to Nyungwe forest National Park. Driving southwest, you will take in the beautiful scenic views of the hilly and ever green country side. The drive from Kigali to Nyungwe forest takes 5 hours. Nyungwe forest is a haven for primate watching in Rwanda rewarding you with clear views of chimps, baboons, colobus and velvert monkeys also a birder’s haven. En route, visit the Butare national museum, Murambi genocide ground and the King’s palace in Nyanza town. You will arrive at Nyungwe Park in the evening; Dine and rest at Nyungwe forest Lodge/Nyungwe top view lodge/Gisakura hotel.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Forest nature/ canopy walk
In the morning, have your breakfast and assemble at Nyungwe forest park offices for briefing and guidelines on the chimps tracking exercise, once done, head to the head trail where there hiking starts off from and embark on your hunt for chimps through the woods. On your hunt, look out for other primates like the silver monkeys, baboons, velvert monkeys and various bird species. On meeting the chimps, have an hour interacting with them in their natural vicinity while taking photographs and videos. At the end of this encounter, retrieve to your starting point and return to your hotel. Later, after lunch, engage in either a guided forest nature walk or a canopy walk. Dinner and overnight your lodge.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon rising, enjoy your breakfast and set off for Volcanoes national park found in the north western part of the country in Musanze province. If time allows, you may engage in a Kigali city tour visiting; Gisozi genocide grounds, national museums as well as craft shops and local markets for suveniours. Later continue with your drive to the park, reaching in the evening. Check in at your lodge and relax. Dine and rest at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (luxury,) Volcanoes Lodge (Super Luxury), Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge / La Palme (Mid-range), Muhabura Hotel (Basic)
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Iby’wacu Cultural Visit
After morning breakfast, assemble at Kinigi park offices a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking rules, guidelines and the code of conduct when within the apes’ vicinity. You should always keep calm, silent and still when with these creatures, always keep away from the gorillas at 7 meters feet even in cases where the baby gorillas may try approaching you, to avoid distracting them and for safety measures. The dominant silverback is the leader of the group and always looking out for its family members. On meeting the gorillas, enjoy an hour observing them and taking photographs. At the end of this remarkable encounter, retrieve to the starting point; meet your guide for your return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. Later, head out for a guided community and nature walk of visit the Iby’wacu Cultural village -enjoying the local entertainment, dance and drama. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Tracking Golden Monkeys – Hike to Lake Ruhondo and Burera
After morning breakfast, retrieve to Kinigi park headquarters where registration and morning briefing on golden monkey tracking is done. You will be provided with tracking guidelines and rules and what to expect on this hike. Together with your guide and tracking gear; engage into the search for golden monkeys through the thick montane forests of Volcanoes national park. During this hike watch out for other primates and wildlife species like baboons and elephants among others. Golden monkeys move in large groups jumping from one tree branch to another but very fascinating to watch in their playful manner. After your encounter with these rare monkeys, retrieve to your starting point, meet your guide for your return to the hotel. After lunch, set out for a stride to the beautiful twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera or go for a guide forest nature / community walk. Later retrieve to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Transfer to Lake Kivu
On your last at Volcanoes National Park, have breakfast at leisure and later hit the road for your transfer to Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest fresh water lake found in Gisenti province. Driving south west wards, you will enjoy wonderful views of the Murambi Genocide memorial site, Nyanza and Butare King’s palace. Day 7: Morning Boat Cruise to Nyamirundi Island
Rise to the morning breeze of Lake Kivu, have breakfast and go for an amazing morning boat ride along the L. Kivu waters bringing you to the Nyamirundi Island – a renowned Coffee making Island. Here you will explorer the coffee making process from the harvesting, drying, processing, and parking of the finished product. Later, retrieve ashore for your return to Kigali.
