Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
At your hotel, you will be picked up by your tour guide following breakfast and set off for Volcanoes national park found in the north western part of the country in Musanze province. If time allows, you may engage in a Kigali city tour visiting; Gisozi genocide grounds, national museums as well as craft shops and local markets for suveniours. Later continue with your drive to the park, reaching in the evening. Check in at your lodge and relax. Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Iby’wacu Cultural Visit
After morning breakfast, assemble at Kinigi park offices for a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking rules, guidelines and the code of conduct when within the apes’ vicinity. You should always keep calm, silent and still when with these creatures, always keep away from the gorillas at 7 meters feet even in cases where the baby gorillas may try approaching you, to avoid distracting them and for safety measures. The dominant silverback is the leader of the group and always looking out for its family members. On meeting the gorillas, enjoy an hour observing them and taking photographs. At the end of this remarkable encounter, retrieve to the starting point; meet your guide for your return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. Later, head out for a guided community and nature walk of visit the Iby’wacu Cultural village -enjoying the local entertainment, dance and drama. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day3: Tracking Golden Monkeys – Hike to Lake Ruhondo and Burera
After morning breakfast, retrieve to Kinigi park headquarters where registration and morning briefing on golden monkey tracking is done. You will be provided with tracking guidelines and rules and what to expect on this hike. Together with your guide and tracking gear; engage into the search for golden monkeys through the thick montane forests of Volcanoes national park. During this hike watch out for other primates and wildlife species like baboons and elephants among others. Golden monkeys move in large groups jumping from one tree branch to another but very fascinating to watch in their playful manner. After your encounter with these rare monkeys, retrieve to your starting point; meet your guide for your return to the hotel. After lunch, set out for a stride to the beautiful twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera or go for a guide forest nature / community walk. Later retrieve to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Hike to Karisoke Research Center and Transfer to Lake Kivu
This is your last day at Volcanoes National park: wake up, have breakfast at leisure and go for a hike to Dian Fossey’s remains – the American scientific Research who devoted her life to the conservation and protection of mountain gorillas. You will hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and the remains of the Karisoke Research Center which was the base of her activities/ work. Have lunch and later, hit the road for your transfer to Lake Kivu, En route, visit the Murambi genocide site, King’s palace in Nyanza. Arriving at the Lake shores in the evening, check in at your hotel and relax by the lake side. Day 5: Morning Boat Cruise to Nyamirundi Island
Rise to the morning breeze of Lake Kivu, have breakfast and go for an amazing morning boat ride along the L. Kivu waters bringing you to the Nyamirundi Island – a renowned Coffee making Island. Here you will explorer the coffee making process from the harvesting, drying, processing, and parking of the finished product. Day 6: Transfer Back to Kigali
Rise early, enjoy your cup of coffee and get ready for your return to Kigali. Once in the city, enjoy the city drive / tour to some historical, economic and political dwellings; national museum, First House of President Habyarima – the starting point of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide after the president’s plane was put down,local markets and craft shops for suveniours. Later drop off at the hotel or airport.
