Day 1: Kigali City Tour – Trip to Volcanoes National Park
This excursion begins with your pick up by the company guide from the hotel or airport and hit on the road for your trip to Volcanoes national park. This national park is the home to mountain gorillas in Rwanda and it’s found in the northwestern part of the country in musanze province- one of the busiest towns of Rwanda. If you wish, take a Kigali City tour to Gisozi genocide grounds, national museums as well as craft shops and local markets for suveniours. Later, driving northwest wads, you will reach the park in evening. Check in at your lodge and relax. Dine and rest at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (luxury,) Volcanoes Lodge (Super Luxury), Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge / La Palme (Mid-range), Muhabura Hotel (Basic).
Day 2: Trekking Mountain Gorillas – Iby’wacu Village Tour
Have breakfast and head to Kinigi park headquarters where you will be briefed by the head guide / ranger on the trekking rules, guidelines and the code of conduct when within the apes’ vicinity. You should always keep calm, silent and still when with these creatures, always keep away from the gorillas at 7 meters feet even in cases where the baby gorillas may try approaching you, to avoid distracting them and for safety measures. The dominant silverback is the leader of the group and always looking out for its family members. On meeting the gorillas, enjoy an hour observing them and taking photographs. At the end of this remarkable encounter, retrieve to the starting point; meet your guide for your return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. Later, head out for a guided community and nature walk of visit the Iby’wacu Cultural village -enjoying the local entertainment, dance and drama. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Tracking Golden Monkeys – Hike to Lake Ruhondo and Burera
After morning breakfast, retrieve to Kinigi park headquarters where registration and morning briefing on golden monkey tracking is done. You will be provided with tracking guidelines and rules and what to expect on this hike. Together with your guide and tracking gear; engage into the search for golden monkeys through the thick montane forests of Volcanoes national park. During this hike watch out for other primates and wildlife species like baboons and elephants among others. Golden monkeys move in large groups jumping from one tree branch to another but very fascinating to watch in their playful manner. After your encounter with these rare monkeys, retrieve to your starting point; meet your guide for your return to the hotel. After lunch, set out for a stride to the beautiful twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera or go for a guide forest nature / community walk. Later retrieve to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Hike to Karisoke Research Center – Return to Kigali – Departure
This is your last day at Volcanoes National park: wake up, have breakfast at leisure and go for a hike to Dian Fossey’s remains – the American scientific Research who devoted her life to the conservation and protection of mountain gorillas. You will hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and the remains of the Karisoke Research Center which was the base of her activities/ work. Have lunch and later set off for Kigali city. If time allows, you may have a city tour to Gisozi, Kandt House, local markets and craft shops and later be dropped off at either a hotel / airport for departure flight.
